DANG
I love Cereal!
Ok, here's the deal.
I like cereal. A LOT! I like all sorts of
cereal. In fact, I've never met a cereal that I
didn't like... or at least that I couldn't stand to eat.
I don't exactly have a favorite, but I DO have favorites
in the different categories of cereal. But I'll
get into that later. For now let's just stick to
the generalities of my cereal obsession.
I'm not
certain where my cereal fetish arose from. I don't
remember if I was a particularly big cereal eater as a
kid. I don't remember ever begging mom or dad for
a particular cereal, but I do remember my first
favorite...
Boo Berry.
Boo
Berry cereal is the third and lesser known member of the
Holy Trinity of Kids cereals which consists of
Count Chocola
( chocolate flavored corn balls with marshmallow
bats),
Frankenberry ( straberry flavored monster heads
with marshmallows ), and of course, Boo Berry (
blueberry flavored monster heads with marshmallows ).
Boo Berry was, and is, my mother's favorite cereal...
which may well be where I get my pension for this
particular puffed corn treat. I take after my
mother to a large degree, so I would certainly attribute
this certain liking to heredity. Boo Berry,
unfortunately, has become quite scarce as of late.
It is almost a rarity to find it on the shelves anywhere
nowadays. Of course, this is not exactly a gourmet
cereal by any stretch of the imagination. Boo
Berry is a simple and sweet cereal that also magically
turns the milk into a beautiful pastel blue color.
Unlike
most kids I knew, I didn't eat cereal for the prizes,
though I was known to do a little premature digging in
order to come up with the better prizes before my
brother could get ahold of them. I had ALL of the
California Raisins toys from their cereal, but I don't
have a clue what happened to them. I DO remember
that my favorite toy I'd gotten from cereal was the
Fruit Loops decoder rings, man those where HOT Stuff
back in the day.
Other
child hood favorites that are hard to find, IF they are
even on the market at all are:
As a
child I was always particularly attracted to the sweet
candy-like cereals that all youngsters seem to crave.
Cereals like Lucky Charms ( magically Delicious! ),
Captain Crunch ( With ONLY red and blue berries ), and
the always popular Frosted Flakes. But, as with
all foods, my taste for cereal began to mature with age.
By high school I found myself wolfing down multiple
bowls of "adult" cereals like Shredded Mini Wheat and
Raisin Bran ( both of which give me massive amounts of
gas! ). Besides just tasting great they also are
FULL of fiber and niacin, which is probably where that
awful gas comes from.
Today I
jump at the chance to try new cereals, to measure them
up to the almost forgotten cereals of my childhood.
At the moment my favorite "Adult" cereal is
Honey Bunches Of
Oats with Peaches. Oh dang it
they are so good... especially with a little honey
lightly poured on top. Man oh man that'd good
eatin'!
The only
problem with cereal is that it is not very travel
friendly... well, that's not entirely true. The
MILK is not travel friendly. Since milk must stay
refrigerated it is not such a good idea to take cereal
on, say, a camping trip or something outdoors.
That is, unless you buy the "Irradiated Milk" which is
milk that has been bombarded with radiation such that it
no longer has to be refrigerated... but who wants to
take the risk of getting cereal cancer? Not to
mention that irradiated milk is room temperature, and
the coldness of the milk is a very important factor to
the satisfying effect of cereal. But, in a pinch,
I suppose that "Nuculer Milk" would do fine.
